New Delhi: A CBI probe into the arrest of a Delhi Police inspector has revealed that he allegedly demanded a Rs 3 crore bribe from a Puducherry-based businessman, promising to “influence” an ongoing investigation into a fake drug manufacturing case. The agency is likely to widen the probe to examine the role of officials from other bodies, including the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, with several names surfacing during the investigation. The CBI has registered an FIR against the inspector and some private individuals, alleging that the officer promised relief to the businessman in cases registered earlier this year. These cases were taken over from the Puducherry govt, in which the businessman and his associate were among the accused. The FIRs were filed following a complaint by a pharmaceutical company that flagged the illegal production and sale of spurious drugs in the name of its brands in Delhi and other states. The businessman was arrested by local police and granted bail in Jan. The CBI subsequently registered FIRs after the probe was transferred to it. Investigators said he had been trying to find someone to help “manage” the cases.According to the CBI, the alleged dealings escalated in mid-May when the businessman met the inspector at Aerocity near the airport to discuss the matter. The businessman was then allegedly taken to the office of a senior public servant. During the meeting, the official assured him of a favourable outcome in his CBI cases, claiming strong connections within the agency. The official allegedly demanded Rs 3 crore, with an advance of Rs 1.5 crore. To arrange the money, the intermediary and the inspector allegedly held meetings in Vadodara to finalise the transfer. A Chennai-based hawala operator was roped in to route Rs 1 crore of the advance to Delhi.Earlier this week, the CBI intercepted an attempt to deliver the bribe to the inspector in the Chandni Chowk area. The agency has booked the accused under Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, along with provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
