Residents rue poor condition of Camel’s Back road
Mussoorie: Potholes, overflowing sewer, sinking of road at several points and roadside parking have marred the beauty of Camel's Back road of Mussoorie frequented by residents for morning and evening walks."The road is full of potholes and walking is extremely difficult, especially for senior citizens. Several people have complained of falling due to potholes. Sewer is overflowing onto the road making it difficult for residents to walk with stench everywhere," said Rajat Sharma, a resident. "This was once a most sought after road for morning and evening walks but of late its beauty has been marred by indiscriminate parking of vehicles, dumping of construction materials on the roadside and also wanton disposal of construction waste down the slopes," said a resident on condition of anonymity.TOI spoke to executive officer of Mussoorie Municipal Council, Rajesh Naithani, who said for the past two years, the road was being maintained by Peyjal Nigam. "It was responsible for digging and repairing the road but it has failed to properly repair the road which is now sinking at several places. The sub-divisional magistrate had also directed it to repair the road but it has not done it," Naithani said.Prem Kumar, executive engineer of Peyjal Nigam, told TOI the road would be repaired after the rains.
This road is named after a natural rock structure shaped like a camel visible on a hill adjoining this road and a large number of tourists come there for the view. The British favoured the road for horse riding while it is much favoured now by residents for morning and evening walks.
