BANGALORE: The High Court said the police has acted decisively and has done a commendable job in the investigation of the Prathiba S Murthy case but we are not concerned with the individual case but with the system as a whole. We are looking at ways to see how the criminal justice system can be improved with the coordination of the police, prosecution and judiciary.
The amicus curiae (friend of the court) S S Naganand appointed by the high court submitted suggestions how the criminal justice system could be strengthened. The HC has asked the state government counsel M N Sheshadri and amicus curiae S S Naganand to make recommendations about names to set up a committee to look into the crimes against women.
The HC took up the issue following a letter from Justice S R Bannurmath speaking about concerns regarding safety and security of women, to the acting Chief Justice B Padmaraj. The letter was treated as a PIL and the high court took up the issue suo motu. The high court acting Chief Justice B Padmaraj and Justice V Jagannathan heard the recommendations made by Naganand. He suggested computerisation, providing better equipment to the enforcement officers computerising and revamping the driving licence system, segregation of investigation of serious crimes and petty crimes, improving the service conditions of policemen, augmenting and improving prosecution.
