bangalore: primary and secondary education minister h. vishwanath on wednesday came down heavily on litterateurs and pro-kannada activists who were opposing english medium schools. ``why are the children and grandchildren of these litterateurs studying in english medium schools when they are so interested in promoting kannada language? those who preach must first practice,'''' vishwanath told reporters here on wednesday.
without mentioning the names, vishwanath said children of president of the kannada sahitya parishat were studying in english medium school. ``how can big litterateur like j.h. naik say that teaching in government schools is bad. are all the 50,000 schools bad? i have studied in a government school. what is wrong with me?'''' on the writers'' justification that children were forced to go to english medium schools because government schools were bad, vishwanath asked: ``as members of the society, what is their responsibility in improving these schools. it is not the government''s job alone to improve the status of education. i have a lot of respect for litterateurs. but it is wrong to take a hypocritic stand, specially on mother-tongue. the language policy has not been violated anywhere in the state.'''' stating that the writers must first understand what they speak, the minister said: ``why have these writers who have authored several books not contributed even 50 books to the schools where they studied?'''' vishwanath said he would expose the double-standards of these persons by releasing a list of their kith and kin studying in english medium institutions. ``i will do it at an appropriate time,'''' he stated.
