Karnataka government firms up, says ready for no-confidence motion
With the JD(S)-Congress government confronted with an existential crisis after the resignation of 16 legislators of the ruling coalition, the state cabinet met on Thursday and resolved to face a possible no-confidence motion with conviction. After the meeting, which was chaired by chief minister HD Kumaraswamy, the cabinet discussed at length its political predicament and expressed confidence that the government would survive as it has in the past. The cabinet decided to face a no-confidence motion if the BJP moves one, or call for trust vote if required.

Hearing the MLAs’ plea in the morning, the court set 6pm as the deadline for the legislators to meet the speaker and submit their resignations in the prescribed format. It gave Kumar time till 10am Friday, when the petitions come up for hearing, to decide on the resignations.

“The apex court has said ‘to take decision forthwith’. I had the proceedings of MLAs’ meeting and of them submitting their resignations videographed. I will give it to the Supreme court on Friday. I’ve asked some questions to the MLAs and some said they faced hurdles when they came here. It will take the entire night for me to think on all these,” he told reporters after a 30-minute meeting with 11 rebel MLAs in his chamber.
