Sangam:Monday's snan of Maghi Purnima marks the culmination of month-long Kalpwas for more than five lakh Kalpwasis camping on the banks of Ganga. Most of the Kalpwasis, especially those hailing from neighbouring states, have started packing their bags.
Magh Mela authorities claimed that around 3 to 5 lakh devotees are present on the riverbanks on any given day of Mela.
On main bathing days, including Makar Sankranti, Paush Purnima, Mauni Amavasya, Basant Panchmi and Maghi Purnima, the number swells to many lakhs.
Scholar Ashutosh Varshney said, "After the Maghi Purnima snan, devouts offer alms to the poor with the promise of returning the next year."On their return, Kalpwasis carry a handful of sand, Gangajal and tulsi leaves as prasad. They also listen to the Satyanarayan Katha and organise Bhandara to feed the poor.
