Kutch district leads Gujarat with 17.8% of total emissions
Gandhinagar: Kutch district, which witnessed rapid industrialisation after the 2001 earthquake, accounts for 17.8% of the total emissions in Gujarat. According to data from the Gujarat climate change department, Kutch is followed by Jamnagar (13.13%), Surat (10.57%), Kheda (8.44%) and Bharuch (7.97%) districts as the top five districts in terms of emissions released. These five districts account for 57.91% of the state's total emissions, according to official figures.According to the climate change tracker portal of the state's climate change department, as of 2023, the total emissions in the state stood at 261 million metric tonnes of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent). The annual growth of emissions between 2005 and 2023 in the state was 4.29%, and the per capita emission in the state as of 2023 stood at 3.66 tonnes of CO2e. As of 2020, the state contributed 9.55% of the country's emissions, according to the climate change tracker.The five districts with the lowest emissions contribution in the state are Botad, which accounts for 0.23% of the state's emissions, followed by Chhota Udepur (0.26%), Aravalli (0.42%), Sabarkantha (0.52%) and Mahisagar district, which accounts for 0.58% of the state's emissions as of 2023.
