Bhutan experiences 5.8-magnitude earthquake; tremors felt in parts of Northeast India
NEW DELHI: A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck Bhutan late on Sunday night, triggering multiple aftershocks and sending tremors across parts of Northeast India, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The earthquake occurred at 11.06pm IST at a depth of 26km, with its epicentre located in Bhutan.
The epicentre was about 252km from parts of Assam, and tremors were felt in several areas across India's northeastern region following the quake.
The NCS said the earthquake occurred at latitude 27.627 N and longitude 89.660 E.
"EQ of M: 5.8, On: 07/06/2026 23:06:43 IST, Lat: 27.627 N, Long: 89.660 E, Depth: 26 Km, Location: Bhutan," the agency said in a post on X.
The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) also reported the earthquake, placing its magnitude at 5.6. According to GFZ, the quake occurred at a depth of 10km.
The main tremor was followed by a series of aftershocks in the region, indicating continued seismic activity after the initial earthquake.
The first aftershock, measuring magnitude 2.8, was recorded at 11:18:43pm IST, around 12 minutes after the main quake. The NCS said it occurred at a depth of 22km, with its epicentre at latitude 27.580 N and longitude 89.821 E.
"EQ of M: 2.8, On: 07/06/2026 23:18:43 IST, Lat: 27.580 N, Long: 89.821 E, Depth: 22 Km, Location: Bhutan," the agency said in a subsequent update.
Another aftershock of magnitude 2.4 was recorded at 11.52pm IST. According to the NCS, it originated at a depth of 18km, making it shallower than both the main earthquake and the earlier aftershock.
The sequence of tremors occurred within less than an hour of the initial earthquake, with magnitudes declining from 5.8 to 2.8 and then 2.4. The recorded depths of the seismic events ranged between 18km and 26km, according to NCS data.
The NCS continued to monitor the seismic activity and issued updates through its social media channels. No immediate reports of casualties or damage were available at the time of reporting.
