PUNE: The All India Chess Federation (AICF) is rejoicing at the decision of chess’ inclusion in the 26 Asian Games in Doha, Qatar.
But dont take V. Anand’s participation for granted. Anand would like to participate “in principle�. However, the former World Champion and India’s top player has given a warning to officials. In his own subtle way.
In an e-mail interview to this paper, Anand wrote: “The only reason I see for my non-participation is that I have some other strong event.
Another reason may sadly be the AICF’s handling of the matter as they did with the Bled Olympiad.�
Despite knowing Anand’s bitterness towards the Olympiad experience, AICF had named him as captain without consulting him.
Could match fees also be a consideration? Should AICF pay for Anand’s professional services?
Anand wrote: “Most teams, for example, Russia and The Netherlands, get a fee to play in Olympiad and other team competitions. I dont want to talk for myself personally.� It could mean Anand talking to his team-mates, forming a group, and then dealing with the AICF.
