Congress leader
Digvijaya Singh courted a fresh controversy on Sunday by making a derogatory remark that women who wear jeans and keep mobile phones do not support Prime Minister
Narendra Modi. He said middle-aged women in the 40-50 age group are more influenced by
Modi.
Singh made the controversial remarks at a Jan Jagran camp while addressing the Congress workers in Bhopal. The former Madhya Pradesh chief minister claimed that Congress leader
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra told him that jeans-clad women do not support Modi.
Therefore, Congress should work on approaching these younger women, she had advised him.
In the video that has now gone viral on social media, the Congress leader said, “Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said something interesting; women who are 40 to 50 years old are slightly more influenced by PM Modi, but girls who wear jeans and keep mobiles are not affected.... there is a need to talk to them a little, as they are active on social media."
BJP objected to the statement and in a veiled attack against Priyanka said Singh’s remarks reflects “the mindset of the Congress party that believes women are not individuals and citizens but are mere vote banks just before the elections by giving empty slogans like ‘mein ladki hoon, lad sakti hoon’”.
Women on Twitter also slammed Singh and posted pictures under hashtag #JeansTwitter to claim they wear jeans, are under 40 and still support Modi.
