Netizens raise objections on ‘misogynistic’ passage in CBSE paper

A Class X English question paper of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) where comprehension passages spoke of “emancipation of the wife” destroying parents’ authority over children and how a wife’s authority depended on the “formal obedience” she gave to the husband, has created an uproar on social media.

The passage, which has since been dropped, sparked a huge controversy and widespread outrage for allegedly promoting “misogyny”, "gender stereotyping" and supporting "regressive notions'' prompting the board to drop the question.It was further decided to award full marks to all students for the said passage.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi joined students in expressing displeasure over the question and asked the board to issue an immediate apology and conduct a thorough review into this lapse to ensure it is never repeated again.

Congress politician Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also echoed her mother’s views and accused the BJP Government of endorsing “retrograde views” on women.
