A Kanpur trial court will deliver the judgement in the Behmai massacre case against the four accused who are surviving after thirty-eight years which dates back to February 14, 1981.The killings were carried out by notorious dacoit, Phoolan Devi and her gang, allegedly as revenge for the sexual violence perpetrated on her by men of the Thakur caste, who dominate the village. The killings also led to political fallout, with then UP CM V P Singh, resigning, owning moral responsibility for the massacre. She was kept in the Gwalior prison, rather than being sent to an UP prison which was agreed by then MP CM Arjun Singh. She was later released without facing the trail in 1994 after spending 11 years in Gwalior and Jabalpur jails and the charges against the four accused who are still surviving were framed only in 2012. Phoolan Devi was assassinated outside her official residence in Delhi in July 2001.
