AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi has accused the Congress of being responsible for the long incarceration of activists Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, who are jailed under the UAPA in the 2020 Delhi riots case. He said amendments made to the law during the UPA regime expanded the definition of terrorism, leading to denial of bail and prolonged detention of undertrial prisoners. Referring to Supreme Court observations, Owaisi argued that the stringent provisions allow custody for up to 180 days without filing a chargesheet. He claimed these provisions are frequently misused against minorities and recalled raising objections in the Lok Sabha when the law was amended. Owaisi also questioned why Congress leaders have not faced similar incarceration, asserting that his warnings about misuse of the law have now proven true.
