An ultra-cyclist from Bengaluru has finished third in virtual Race Across America (vRAAM), a high-endurance competition which was conducted from June 16 to 28 and saw the participation of 17 racers from various countries. Lt Col Bharat Pannu, the sole cyclist from India, said he was game for vRAAM when the organisers, citing the Covid-19 crisis, decided to opt for a virtual format of the real event - Race Across America - which is held from its west coast to the east in mid-June every year. Accordingly, they simulated the entire race route and synced it with the participants' indoor equipment so that they could ride in their respective countries. Since the indoor set-up didn't pose difficulties like hot/cold weather and headwind, the elevation was increased from 53,000m to 71,000m. Bharat competed from Pune, which is home to most of his crew members. One should cover a distance of 3,248km in 12 days to be called a 'finisher'. The race was so gruelling that only nine of the 17 participants completed it. While Bharat stood third with a distance of 4,086km, the first and second spots were secured by Hirokazu Suzuki (Japan, 4,539km) and Lee Patnam (UK, 4,148km), respectively.
