Four top transport tipsNoteworthy for: Sydney struggles to maintain an effective public transport system for its 4.6 million residents - it's the legacy of an unplanned city. Be patient.
1. Pre-purchase tickets: Cash fares for ferries and trains are available at each station but you'll need to pre-purchase bus tickets. Outlets are everywhere – look for convenience stores with a picture of a blue bus in a yellow circle. It's more economical and convenient to purchase a TravelTen if you'll be making a few trips in that particular zone.

3. Avoid driving: Congested and full of toll-ways, Sydney roads are not for the faint-of-heart. If you accidentally use a toll-way without an electronic tag fitted in your vehicle, pay online as soon as possible before you (or your hire car company) are fined.

4. Walk: Sydney taxis aren't cheap. Exploring the CBD on foot is usually faster, more convenient and infinitely more pleasant.
