Myanmar’s military government extended its emergency rule for another six months, delaying promised elections as the country faces ongoing conflict. The military, in power since its 2021 coup, continues to battle opposition forces and ethnic militias controlling large areas. Despite earlier plans for 2023 elections, no date has been set. Critics see the vote as a means to legitimize military rule, while opposition groups vow to resist through nonviolent means. The UN estimates over 3.5 million people have been displaced by the crisis.
