Red Dead Redemption 2 becomes third best-selling game in history as it beats Wii Sports that held the position for 20 years
GTA 6 maker Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2 has become the third best-selling video game in history. The open-world title surpassed Wii Sports after selling more than 85 million copies as of March 2026. The milestone comes nearly two decades after Wii Sports launched in 2006 and sold around 82.9 million copies. According to figures reported by IGN, Red Dead Redemption 2 recorded stronger sales over the past 12 months than in any year since its release in 2018, helping push the game ahead in the all-time rankings.Only two titles remain above it: Grand Theft Auto V, also developed by Rockstar Games, has more than 230 million copies sold, and Minecraft leads the list with around 350 million copies. The continued sales momentum comes as Rockstar’s focus remains on Grand Theft Auto VI, while Red Dead Redemption 2 continues to attract players years after launch.

Red Dead Redemption 2 sales rise continues despite lack of current-gen update

Despite its ongoing commercial performance, Red Dead Redemption 2 has yet to receive a patch designed for newer consoles. On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S systems, the game still runs at 30fps.The absence of an update has been a recurring point of discussion among players, especially since Rockstar released a performance update for the original Red Dead Redemption in October 2023.
Meanwhile, Red Dead Online has remained behind GTA Online in terms of content support and revenue generation, leading some players to question whether greater investment in the multiplayer component could have changed its trajectory.Discussion around a potential Red Dead Redemption 3 has also continued. In late 2025, former Rockstar co-founder and writer Dan Houser said Red Dead Redemption 3 “will probably happen.” Earlier, in 2023, actor Roger Clark said he was “certain” fans would see Red Dead Redemption 3 “one day,” while adding that he had no information on when that could happen. For now, Rockstar’s development efforts appear centered on GTA 6, which the company said is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026. What happens next with the Red Dead franchise remains unclear, but Red Dead Redemption 2’s sales suggest interest in the series has continued years after its debut.
