Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is set to bring back Edward Kenway’s pirate adventure with a range of updates to naval exploration, combat, hip management, and side activities. Ubisoft has shared a detailed look at the game’s naval gameplay, revealing new mechanics, expanded systems, and improvements designed for modern hardware.
The Jackdaw remains at the centre of the experience, accompanying Edward throughout the Caribbean. The remastered version removes loading screens between naval exploration and major cities, while introducing new navigation tools, dynamic weather systems, updated combat options, and expanded fleet management features. Most of the changes focus on making naval gameplay more seamless while adding new activities and progression systems for players exploring the open sea.
Key naval gameplay features in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced
Navigation and exploration
Players can now use two new navigation tools while sailing:
| Feature | What it does |
| Pathfinder | Highlights a route to a selected destination across the map |
| Follow Sea | Functions as an autopilot system that automatically steers the Jackdaw to the selected destination |
The game also features all 35 original sea shanties from Black Flag, plus 10 new songs for quests and activities. Players can manually select songs via a new shanty wheel or disable spontaneous singing altogether.
Dynamic weather system
The Caribbean now features a revamped weather system powered by Ubisoft’s Atmos technology. Players can encounter:
- Violent storms
- Rogue winds and waves
- Two types of waterspouts
- Lightning strikes that deal area-of-effect damage
- Changing environmental conditions that affect sailing
According to Ubisoft, weather now plays a larger role in gameplay and can directly threaten ships navigating rough waters.
Naval combat receives new weapons and upgrades
The Jackdaw’s arsenal has been expanded with new firing modes and combat abilities.
New and upgraded naval weapons
| Weapon | New functionality |
| Ram Dash | High-speed ramming attack with increased damage |
| Deadman’s Cohort Mortar | Area bombardment using multiple carcass bombs |
| Bow Chaser Cannons | New double-shot firing mode |
| Broadside Cannons | Heated shot ammunition option |
| Shrapnel Barrels | New anti-sail explosive attack |
Every naval weapon now includes a secondary firing mode that can be swapped during combat. The naval Wanted System also returns. Increased notoriety attracts Pirate Hunters, with stronger enemies appearing as the player’s wanted level rises. Players can lower notoriety by boarding ships, attacking enemy vessels, or bribing officials at ports.
New officer system and fleet management
One of the biggest additions in Resynced is the introduction of recruitable Officers who provide permanent ship bonuses.
Officers confirmed so far
| Officer | Ability |
| Lucy Baldwin | Unlocks Perfect Brace defensive mechanic |
| The Padre | Unlocks Ram Dash and assists during boarding |
| Tobias “Deadman” Smith | Adds an additional broadside volley attack |
Captured ships can also be added to Kenway’s Fleet, which is now fully integrated into the game instead of relying on the companion app used in the original release. Fleet ships can be assigned to missions that generate resources, trade goods, and other rewards.
Diving, hunting and side activities return
Several naval side activities from the original game are returning.
Players can:
- Explore underwater locations using the Diving Bell
- Free dive anywhere in the ocean
- Search for hidden treasure chests
- Avoid sharks and underwater hazards
- Hunt whales and sharks through the returning harpooning minigame
- Gather resources for upgrades and crafting
Loot can also be obtained by destroying ships, boarding vessels, capturing forts, collecting floating cargo, and finding burning ships at sea.
Forts and legendary ships return
Each Caribbean region contains a fort that players can attack and capture. Unlike the original game, forts now use a dynamic morale system. Players must reduce enemy morale before confronting and defeating the commander. Capturing forts unlocks new points of interest and additional fleet missions. Legendary Ships also return as endgame challenges.
The four confirmed encounters are:
- El Impoluto
- HMS Fearless & Royal Sovereign (The Twins)
- La Dama Negra
- HMS Prince
Defeating these ships rewards players with exclusive cosmetic customisation items for the Jackdaw, including sails, hull designs, wheels, and figureheads.
Ship upgrades remain essential
Resources gathered during exploration can be spent with Harbourmasters located throughout the Caribbean. Upgrades improve:
- Ship health
- Weapon damage
- Defensive capabilities
- Ammunition capacity
- Overall combat effectiveness
Boarding enemy vessels continues to provide the largest resource rewards, while also offering options to repair the Jackdaw, reduce notoriety, add ships to Kenway’s Fleet, or claim a Captain’s Lockbox for additional currency.
With expanded naval combat, integrated fleet management, dynamic weather, recruitable officers, and new exploration mechanics, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced places a renewed focus on life aboard the Jackdaw while retaining many of the systems that defined the original game’s Caribbean setting.
