India vs New Zealand 1st Test, Day 1 Highlights: Shreyas Iyer-Ravindra Jadeja century stand takes India to 258/4 at stumps

Day 1 Session 3 in a nutshell

Debutant Shreyas Iyer was guts, aggression and flair rolled into one during an unbeaten knock of 75, which was nothing short of a baptism by fire, as India ended on 258 for four on the first day of the opening Test against New Zealand in Kanpur on Thursday. On a pitch that had variable bounce and didn't offer enough pace off it, Iyer put his best foot forward while facing 136 balls, hitting seven boundaries and two sixes on his very first day in office in the longest format. Coming in at 106 for 3 at the fall of Cheteshwar Pujara's (26) wicket, the debutant, in another half an hour, found his skipper Ajinkya Rahane's (33) promising knock come to a halt as Kyle Jamieson (15.2-6-47-3) and Tim Southee (16.4-3-43-1) rocked the middle-order in inspiring post-lunch spells. But at 144 for 4, Iyer took charge with senior all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja (50 batting) for company as they resurrected the innings, at the same time batting with a lot of intent to keep the scoreboard ticking. Jadeja scored his 17th Test fifty and did his trademark sword celebrations much to the delight of the crowd. For New Zealand, Jamieson and Southee were the wicket takers on the opening day.

Both the batsmen got to their fifties in the final session but the highlight of the day was Iyer. Playing his debut game and a what a responsible knock he has played. Iyer walks back to the pavilion unbeaten on 75. Jadeja remains not out on 50. Kyle Jamieson finishes the day with figures of 3 for 47.

He once again has shown that he is superb with the bat in India along with the ball. The famous sword celebration from Jadeja and he then acknowledges the crowd, raising his bat. A fantastic hour for India as Shreyas Iyer (54*) and Ravindra Jadeja (29*) have steadied the Indian ship with a unbeaten 70-run partnership for the fifth wicket. After a terrific performance in the second session, the Kiwis have underperformed in this final session so far. Drinks are one the field now and Kane Williamson has now somehow got to break this threatening stand. 8 overs are still to go for the second new ball!

Southee to Jadeja | FOUR!

Streaky but Ravindra Jadeja gets a boundary off Tim Southee. A teasing length ball just outside off and Jadeja goes for the drive. Thick outside edge and the ball goes through the huge gap between the keeper and slip. The fielder was almost at fourth slip and their was no one in between. The ball comfortably beats both of them behind the stumps and races to the third-man fence. IND 211/4 after 69.4 overs

A terrific knock from the 26-year-old. Cracks his maiden Test fifty in his debut game. A splendid knock from Iyer under pressure. India lost three wickets in the second session but Iyer remained rock-solid at the other end. A 50-plus partnership with Ravindra Jadeja now and Iyer has looked really good today. Gets to his fifty off 94 balls.
