We are moments away from the start of play on Day 2. A few balls misbehaved on Day 1, and the pitch is only bound to deteriorate further as the game goes on.
Tactical chess and defining matchups - The first hour will likely be a tactical battle of nerves. Expect Prasidh Krishna to test Pundir’s resolve with steep bounce, while Karnataka captain Devdutt Padikkal may revisit the short-ball ploy that forced Paras Dogra to retire hurt on Day 1. For the J&K duo, the goal is to survive this testing period and then cash in on the midday batting conditions. With the surface predicted to offer significant turn and grip for the spinners from Day 3 onwards, J&K’s ability to maximize their lead today will be the deciding factor in their quest for a maiden title.
The onus on Karnataka’s bowling discipline - It was a day of toil for the Karnataka bowlers, with only Prasidh Krishna managing to find any success on an easy-paced surface. As the sun rises on Day 2, the pace battery of Vijaykumar Vyshak and Vidyadhar Patil must find a way to extract movement from the early morning moisture. However, the real pressure lies with the spinners, Shreyas Gopal and Shikhar Shetty. With the pitch remaining good for the batters, they must prioritize economy and build a dry spell to frustrate the set batters into a moment of lapse, as breakthroughs are now a necessity rather than a luxury for the hosts.
J&K on the charge with the bat - Resuming play on Day 2, J&K’s mission must be clear, bat Karnataka out of the contest. The spotlight remains firmly on Shubham Pundir, whose masterclass 117 unbeaten made him the first-ever J&K player to register a century in a Ranji final. He is joined by the explosive Abdul Samad, who looked equally comfortable during his unbeaten 52. Their current 105-run stand has already bruised the Karnataka spirits, and if they can weather the initial morning burst, J&K will be eyeing a mammoth first-innings total in the range of 500 to effectively seal a massive advantage over Karnataka.
Welcome back to the grand finale - A warm welcome back to all cricket enthusiasts as we gear up for Day 2 of this historic Ranji Trophy final. The opening day at the KSCA Cricket Stadium belonged entirely to Jammu & Kashmir, who ended the day in a position of absolute authority at 284/2. Having outclassed the 8-time champions Karnataka through sheer batting grit, J&K now find themselves on the doorstep of history. With the Hubli track expected to stay true for at least another day before the wear and tear sets in, the visitors hold all the cards in this high-stakes encounter.
... DAY 2, Session 1 ...
Looking ahead to Day 2 - After such a good start and with more batting still to come, J&K will be eyeing to make the most of the best conditions to bat on Day 2. They will look to pile on the runs and bat Karnataka out of the game while the bowling side searches for early wickets to stem the flow of runs. We will resume proceedings tomorrow at 9.30 am IST (4 am GMT). Cheers for now!
Toil for the Karnataka bowlers - The pacers of Karnataka bowled well in patches but struggled to find consistent breakthroughs on this surface. Only Prasidh Krishna managed to trouble the batters consistently and finished the day with a couple of scalps to his name. Meanwhile, the spinners found it hard to find any assistance from the pitch and went wicketless. Karnataka will need a much better showing in the morning to claw their way back into this final.
Injury scare and Samad brilliance - One concern for the Jammu and Kashmir side would be the injury to their skipper, Paras Dogra, who was hit in the final session of the day. He was forced to leave the field and was replaced by Abdul Samad. The change did not slow the momentum as Samad looked in sublime touch from the outset. He quickly reached a half-century for himself and remained unbeaten at the close of play alongside Pundir to further strengthen the team total.
Pundir and Hassan build the foundation - After a watchful start, Shubham Pundir and Yawer Hassan ensured J&K did not lag in the contest. The duo put together a vital 139-run stand that frustrated the Karnataka bowlers and capitalised on the good batting conditions while they lasted. Although Hassan was eventually dismissed for a well-played 88, Pundir made sure he made his start count. He showed great temperament to reach his century and remains unbeaten at the crease with a magnificent 117.
J&K end Day 1 in total command - It has been a day full of joy for Jammu and Kashmir as they finished the opening day of the Ranji Trophy Final in a position of immense strength. Scoring 284 runs for the loss of just two wickets, they have dictated terms from the very first ball. The batting unit made the most of the favorable conditions to ensure they stayed ahead of the game throughout the three sessions.
