Session 1 in a nutshell
Promising young batters Keegan Petersen and Rassie van der Dussen looked confident in their 55-run unbroken stand for the fourth wicket as South Africa reached 100 for three at lunch on the second day of third and final Test against India. Jasprit Bumrah (11-4-16-2) and Umesh Yadav (7-1-29-1) bowled two top notch deliveries to get rid of opener Aiden Markram (8) and night-watchman Keshav Maharaj (25) but Petersen (40 batting) and Van der Dussen (17 batting) held fort with lot of confidence despite a testing morning session of fast bowling from the Indian line-up. For skipper Virat Kohli, quick wickets are need of the hour as he won't be able to concede a big first innings lead while defending a below-par first innings score of 223. There were a couple of times, Shardul Thakur (6-1-21-0) did find the outside edge of Petersen's bat but on both occasions, the ball died down before skipper Kohli at first slip. The bounce available on the Newlands track isn't as steep as it was at Centurion and Wanderers which belong to the Highveld region. Perhaps, standing up a few yards ahead especially to someone like Shardul who is just about skiddy medium pace perhaps would have been an idea decision. The morning started on a bright note for India as Markram got a beauty from Bumrah that jagged back enough to hoodwink him and take the off-stump away when the batter must have thought that it would just go straight. Maharaj, on his part did a very good job and played out the first 45 minutes before Umesh bowled a classical in-swinger that uprooted the middle stump. Petersen however kept his positive intent as he struck seven boundaries in his 86 ball knock so far while Van Der Dussen was ready to play the waiting game in contrast to his second innings show at the Wanderers.

Lunch on Day 2 | South Africa 100/3
That's it! Lunch on Day 2. An evenly contested session but South Africa will go into the break still holding a slight advantage over India. Mohammed Shami completes the final over before the break. India got two wickets in the session in form of Aiden Markram (8) and nightwatchman Keshav Maharaj (25) but after that Keegan Petersen and Rassie van der Dussen stitched a crucial unbeaten 55-run partnership for the fourth wicket to steady South African innings. Both go into the break unbeaten on 40 and 17 respectively. South Africa still trail India by 123 runs.

14:38 (IST) Jan 12
Shami to Petersen | Dropped!
Tough chance! That was a ripper from Mohammed Shami. Extra bounce and the ball hits the top half of Keegan Petersen's bat. KL Rahul, at third slip dives low to his right, gets a hand to the ball as well but fails to hold on. The ball was dying on him. It was a tough catch but will definitely go down as a dropped chance. SA 37/2 after 15.2 overs
14:30 (IST) Jan 12
Bumrah, Shami continue to probe Proteas batters outside off
Maiden! A tight over from Mohammed Shami comes to an end. Both Jasprit Bumrah and Shami asking some serious questions outside the line of the off stump. The ball is also doing quite a bit, getting assistance from the surface. Both Keshav Maharaj and Keegan Petersen treading very cautiously at the moment. SA 35/2 after 14 overs
14:19 (IST) Jan 12
Shami to Maharaj | FOUR!
Slightly short of length delivery from Mohammed Shami. Keshav Maharaj stands tall and punches it through covers to pick up his second boundary of the day. SA 33/2 after 11.5 overs

Bumrah to Markram | OUT!
Perfect start for India on Day 2. Jasprit Bumrah strikes second-ball. Cleans up Aiden Markram for 8. Wrong judgement from Markram as he tries to leave the ball. 13:48 (IST) Jan 12

It is a true pitch. There is enough in it for the bowlers but if you apply yourself, if you are set then you get value for your shots. I thought it is a very good cricketing pitch. You are never set and need to know which shot to play and which shot to avoid, when you are in you have to make it count which I couldn't do but Virat did. You might feel there's nothing in it when a partnership is building but there's one ball which can do a bit and can surprise you as a batter even when you are set. We definitely should have scored 30-40 runs but we are confident in our bowling line-up. If we bowl in the right areas then we can restrict them. I think 275 is a good total on this pitch.
