The hosts will hope for a good batting day to not only go past Australia's total but also take a substantial lead and put the visitors under pressure.

England were 10 without any loss as openers Rory Burns (4*) and Jason Roy (6*) survived the two overs at the end of the day.

Australia were struggling at 17-2 when Smith walked in to bat after current captain Tim Paine won the toss. And they were in dire straits at 122-8. But their last two wickets more than doubled the score before Smith was the last man out.
