i was convinced that sharing my know-how of nuclear physics in a friendly way would be a challenge. students at this age tend to get bored very fast. i realised that i had to teach and to over come the paranoia i read extensively and developed analogies, admits the unassuming dr parmeshwaran. his efforts materialised as the then principal, prof moogat puts it, students from all divisions used to spill over in my class.
despite this parmeshwaran was very conscientious and with his flexible strategies he succeeded in winning students. ask anil paul, a junior lecturer in physics, on what he learned from dr parmeshwaran, and he'll say, his motto was to create an interest in abstract molecular theories and electronic components. what's more he's never rigid. we as students at one time demanded more updated information in lure of notes and he was more than willing to do so. such is parmeshwaran's appeal. parmeshwaran's knack of reconciling theories with practical examples invokes his students to cause fast paced technological breakthroughs. as he declares, some batches prefer simple notes while some prefer information. i improvise accordingly in this tedious balancing act. to excel, one needs to research specialised areas, and with the sole motive of imparting knowledge, parmeshwaran pursued his doctoral studies in the science of acoustics. says parmeshwaran, the subject was always taught at the m sc level. yet, i pursued extensive research and published reports to inculcate the varied nuances within me and my students. what's more, he undertook student projects too. one such project included the minimisation of sound effects for construction near railway stations and airports. efforts like these promote breakthroughs in practical difficulties and result in effective learning, he feels. luckily for this teacher, his ventures have been acknowledged and recognised. the koyna dam power generation noise reduction plan won him a pmc award for his 'sound contribution'. today dr parmeshwaran works 12 hours a day. he's also the secretary for the acoustics society of india, pune chapter, and an executive secretary in his alma mater s v union high school. his teaching domain though, remains nuclear and acoustics physics. he fuses ideas and information with budding scientists, and performs his karma while he 'switches' roles on the physics centre-stage. talk about a sound example!
