How a healthy gut can protect your child during smog season
The air we breathe often turns heavy with a toxic mix of smoke, dust, and other pollutants that settles down low around the cities during winter.Every year, as smog levels rise, parents worry about cough, breathlessness, skin issues, and repeated infections. Children are the ones who are affected the most as their lungs and immune systems are still developing. Therefore, parents immediately think of masks and air purifiers during this time of year. But what if one of the strongest shields against smog is not only to be worn on the face but also built inside the body? That hidden shield is your child’s gut, as a healthy gut can play a powerful role in keeping children safe and strong, even when the pollution levels rise.

How good gut health can save children from pollution?

Children’s digestive system consists of a large community of good bacteria, also called the gut microbiome. These tiny organisms help to regulate inflammation, fight off harmful germs, and train the immune system to respond properly to threats, including pollutants. When the smog is swallowed in the gut after being cleared from the airways, it can trigger oxidative stress and inflammation. A healthy gut acts like a filter and reduces this inflammation, thus helping the body to eliminate toxins more efficiently.
On the other hand, poor diet, junk food, antibiotics, and stress can weaken this delicate balance, making children more prone to respiratory infections, allergies, and even fatigue during smog-heavy days. Hence, strengthening gut health not only improves digestion but also strengthens the natural defence system against pollution’s harmful effects.

How to build a strong gut defence?

Here are a few ways to make your child’s gut stronger and prepare it for the smog season.
  • A diet rich in antioxidants: omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins C and E, and zinc like oranges , guava, spinach broccoli, nuts eggs , green vegetables helps build up immune system
  • Add protein , fibre and probiotics to your diet: Protein ,Fiber and probiotic-rich foods like vegetables, whole grains, pulses , eggs and curd, should be there in your child’s diet in large quantities as they are the gut's good bacteria's food.
  • Maintaining hydration specially in winters:The consumption of clean and filtered drinking water in the right quantities helps to remove toxins from the body.
  • Physical activeness: Light indoor exercises like cycling or treadmill in the house can improve metabolism and gut function. Parents can also encourage yoga and dancing within their home so that the child’s body stays active.
  • Limit junk food and packaged snacks: Reduce intake of sugary snacks, fried foods, soft drinks, and packaged juices as these disturb the gut balance, increase inflammation, and weaken immunity thus making children more susceptible to respiratory issues during high pollution days.
  • Stress management: Activities like listening to music, reading, yoga, or creative play help to keep the stress hormones in check, supporting gut health.
Smog during the winter season cannot be avoided at all, but its effects can be reduced. The key to it lies beyond masks or air filters, that is, to create a healthy gut that will keep your child strong, energetic, and resilient. After all, real protection comes from within, not just from the outside.Dr Sufla Saxena, Head of Paediatrics and Paediatric Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Manipal Hospital, Delhi
