DMK's Gowtham D emerges victorious, securing 68873 votes, against TVK's Suresh P by a margin of 7034 votes.
The Vanur constituency witnessed a critical contest in the 2026 Assembly elections. The
AIADMK fielded P Murugan, seeking to maintain the party's decade-long hold on this seat. He was challenged by Goutham Dravidamani of the DMK, who campaigned to flip the segment for the ruling alliance. The race was further diversified by P Suresh of the TVK and Karikalan of the NTK, both focusing on local infrastructure and welfare for the Scheduled Caste community.
In the 2021 election, M Chakrapani (AIADMK) won with 92,219 votes (50.99% vote share), defeating Vanni Arasu (VCK) by 21,727 votes. In the 2016 election, M Chakrapani (AIADMK) secured the seat with 64,167 votes (36.79% vote share), defeating DMK candidate R Mydili by 10,223 votes.
Voter turnout reached 91.05%, a sharp rise from the 79.83% in 2021. This surge is largely credited to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) drive, which successfully updated the rolls and mobilised a record number of young, first-time voters across the Vanur and Vikravandi regions.
Vanur (Assembly constituency No. 73) is a reserved (SC) segment in Villupuram district. Primarily agrarian and rural, it serves as a key indicator of political sentiment among Dalit communities in northern Tamil Nadu.
The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections were held in a single phase on April 23, recording a high voter turnout of 85.15%, with results declared on May 4. The polls witnessed an intense three-way contest that challenged the state’s traditional bipolar political structure. The electoral battle was primarily between the DMK-led alliance, including the INC and other parties, headed by MK Stalin and the AIADMK-led alliance, headed by Edappadi K Palaniswami, along with the BJP and other parties. Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), marking actor Vijay’s political debut as a third force across all 234 constituencies.
