NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu appears to be witnessing a dramatic political churn as counting trends from the 2026 Assembly elections point towards a breakthrough performance by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, led by actor-turned-politician Joseph Vijay. Early leads across multiple constituencies suggest that the party, making its electoral debut, is not just competing but potentially reshaping the state’s long-standing Dravidian political order. From Thanjavur to Salem and parts of Chennai, TVK candidates have taken significant leads, signalling a shift in voter sentiment.
The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, led by Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, appears to be facing unexpected setbacks. In key constituencies such as Kolathur, Stalin himself has trailed in early rounds against TVK’s V S Babu, while senior leaders like Anbil Mahesh have also found themselves in tight contests. Although the DMK has managed to hold leads in pockets like Valparai and Madurai East, the broader trend indicates a challenging outing for the incumbent party, raising questions about the durability of its governance plank.
Meanwhile, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and other regional players such as the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam and Pattali Makkal Katchi have shown mixed performances. While AIADMK leaders like Edappadi K. Palaniswami have secured early leads in select constituencies, the party appears to be trailing behind TVK’s surge. DMDK and PMK have managed to stay competitive in certain seats, indicating a fragmented contest beyond the top two players.
Across the state, TVK’s performance has been particularly striking. Candidates such as S Vijay Saravanan in Thanjavur, Sukumar in Sulur, and Vignesh in Kinathukadavu have established comfortable leads, while the party has also gained ground in urban centres like Chennai and Salem. Celebrations among party workers, marked by chants and symbolic displays, reflect growing confidence that the party could emerge as a major force, if not form the government outright.
