Parliament session live updates: Rajya Sabha passes Right to Information (Amendment) Bill

"To allay fears that the proposed law could be misused, the government has included certain safeguards in it such as adding a provision of bail for the accused before trial. While the bill makes triple talaq a non-bailable offence, an accused can approach a magistrate even before trial to seek bail. A provision has been added to allow the magistrate to grant bail "after hearing the wife," the minister said

The Triple Talaq bill criminalises instant divorce by Muslim men. The bill seeks jail term for the guilty husband. It was the first draft legislation tabled by the Modi government in its first session after it took oath of office for a second term in May. In February 2019 after the Modi government had failed to pass the bill in the Rajya Sabha, the President had promulgated the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Ordinance, 2019.
