NEW DELHI: Early trends in the 2026 Kerala assembly elections signal a major setback for the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF), which appears headed for a significant loss after a decade in power. The ruling alliance is trailing in a majority of constituencies, struggling to stay competitive in even 40 of the 140 seats, reflecting strong anti-incumbency against the Pinarayi Vijayan government.
Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan himself faced an early scare in his Dharmadam stronghold, initially trailing before recovering in subsequent rounds of counting. Several senior ministers have also encountered stiff challenges, underlining the scale of voter dissatisfaction across the state.
In contrast, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) has surged ahead decisively, leading in over 100 seats and comfortably crossing the majority mark. The alliance now looks poised for a commanding return to power, capitalising on widespread discontent against the incumbent government.
Meanwhile, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) continues to remain a marginal force in the state, leading in only a couple of constituencies and failing to make significant inroads.
