NEW DELHI: BJP's Dibyendu Adhikari defeated sitting Trinamool MLA Tarun Kumar Maity to clinch the Egra seat, as votes for the West Bengal assembly elections were counted on Monday.
According to the Election Commission, Adhikari received 142,670 votes. Maity, on the other hand, secured 116,978 votes, losing by 25,692 votes.
Maity won the 2021 election with 125,763 votes (52%), defeating BJP’s Arup Das’s 107,272 votes (45%), by a margin of 18,491 votes. He succeeded Samares Das (AITC 2011, 2016), maintaining TMC’s hold since 2006 after Prabodh Chandra Sinha’s independent wins (1977–2001).
Key issues included irrigation and flood control for paddy and vegetable farming, road connectivity linking Egra CDB villages to Contai markets, and drinking water security.
Demand for government health centres, schools and local employment in this rural belt was also prominent. Maity
Egra falls under the Medinipur Lok Sabha constituency, won by TMC’s June Malia in 2024 by 27,191 votes.
