Odisha extends Covid-19 lockdown in containment zones till November 30
Blanket ban on public worship in temples/mosques/churches lifted for November. Now, district administrations will take a call on places of worship in their areas. Odisha decides to keep schools and colleges, cinema halls, swimming pools (except for training) and entertainment complexes closed for the next month. However schools to reopen for classes 9 to 12 from November 16. The government says the situation will be reviewed for reopening cinema/swimming pools on November 16.

UK reduces coronavirus testing target
The British government has scaled back its end-of-year coronavirus testing target to around 1 million a day from almost 2 million, the Financial Times reported on Saturday, citing people familiar with the matter and leaked documents. The aim to reach 1.9 million a day has been reduced due to delay in rolling out new technologies, the report added.

The United States passed nine million reported coronavirus cases on Friday and broke its own record for daily new infections for the second day in a row, according to a tally from Johns Hopkins University. The US, which has seen a resurgence of its outbreak since mid-October, has now notched up 9,034,295 cases, according to a real-time count by the Baltimore-based school. On Friday the country set a record for new daily infections of more than 94,000 in 24 hours, breaking the record of 91,000 it had set just one day earlier.
France reports 49,215 coronavirus cases in one day
The accumulative cases since the outbreak of the pandemic reached 1,331,984. With 256 more people losing their lives to the disease in the past 24 hours, the death toll caused by COVID-19 hit 36,565, the data released on Friday revealed, Xinhua news agency reported. Some 22,153 people are currently hospitalized for Covid-19 infections, including 3,368 in intensive care. France started a second national confinement from Thursday midnight.

Coronavirus mutation may have made it more contagious, finds study
A study involving more than 5,000 COVID-19 patients in Houston finds that the virus that causes the disease is accumulating genetic mutations, one of which may have made it more contagious. According to the paper published in the peer-reviewed journal mBIO, that mutation, called D614G, is located in the spike protein that pries open our cells for viral entry. It's the largest peer-reviewed study of SARS-CoV-2 genome sequences in one metropolitan region of the US to date.
Breaking all previous records, Covid-19 cases again reached a single-day highest at 5,891. A total of 47 people died on Friday, taking the total number of fatalities to 6,470. In the last 24 hours, 4,433 people have recovered. The number of Covid-19 cases marginally increased, despite a small dip in the number of tests. Among 59,641 people tested on Friday, 9.8% tested positive, taking the active cases to 32,363.
President Donald Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden on Friday sought support in Midwestern states where the coronavirus has roared back, with Trump falsely accusing doctors of profiting from Covid-19 deaths while Biden said Trump had surrendered to the pandemic.
Nagaland reports 210 more Covid recoveries, 51 fresh cases
Nagaland on Friday reported the recovery of 210 more Covid-19 patients, taking the total number of people cured of the disease to 7,229, while 51 fresh cases pushed the tally to 8,945, Health Minister S Pangnyu Phom said.
