What was meant to be a quick comedy reel ended up changing comedian Yash Bhardwaj’s life for nearly two months.The stand-up comic has revealed that he was detained in Dubai for 47 days before being deported to India, all because of a joke video that authorities reportedly took seriously.Sharing the experience on Instagram, Bhardwaj said the ordeal began on March 19 while he was performing at a gig in Dubai. In the middle of his routine work life, he received a call from Dubai Police asking him to report to their headquarters immediately. What followed was something he says he never saw coming.According to Bhardwaj, the issue stemmed from a comedy reel he had posted about Google Maps allegedly malfunctioning in Dubai amid tensions in the Middle East. At the time, the region was dealing with the fallout of the conflict involving the United States and Iran, and the comedian had made a light-hearted joke about the situation.But the joke didn't land the way he expected."It was a harmless, dumb reel," Bhardwaj wrote, adding that authorities viewed it differently. He said he was treated as a potential national security concern, detained, and spent the next 47 days in a detention centre. After weeks in custody, Bhardwaj was eventually deported and returned to India on May 5. Since then, he has been living in Mumbai and slowly rebuilding his routine.The comedian admitted that the experience took a heavy toll, not just on him but also on his family. The weeks of uncertainty left them emotionally exhausted and created financial strain as well."It wasn't easy at all for me or my family," he shared. "It drained us physically, emotionally and, to some extent, financially."Even so, Bhardwaj says he's trying to move forward. One thing that helped was getting back on stage sooner than expected. Performing again gave him a sense of normalcy after what he describes as one of the most difficult periods of his life.Mumbai, he says, has been kind to him during this transition.Now, he's preparing for another move - this time to Bengaluru, a city that holds special meaning for him. Long before the viral reels and comedy tours, Bengaluru was where his relationship with stand-up comedy first began.In his post, Bhardwaj said he plans to spend a few weeks there as he starts what he calls a new chapter. Sixteen years after first falling in love with performing in the city, he's heading back, carrying a story he probably never imagined would become part of his journey.For now, the comedian appears focused on getting back to doing what he knows best - making people laugh, even after discovering that sometimes a joke can have consequences far bigger than anyone expects.
