​Security ties, US Independence in focus: 150 bikers hit Kolkata streets to celebrate US-India partnership

On Sunday, Kolkata stirred to the rumble of motorcycle engines as more than 150 riders gathered for the Joy Freedom Ride: A US-India Security Partnership rally, organised by the US Consulate General Kolkata in partnership with its Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC) and Kolkata Police. It hosted a motorcycle rally as superbikes, bullets and cruisers rolled out for the Freedom Ride. As the convoy made its way through Kolkata’s streets, onlookers paused to watch, phones came out for photographs and children waved enthusiastically at the riders, enjoying the extravaganza unfolding across the city. Harley-Davidson bikes from the Kolkata Police fleet, usually reserved for special occasions, made a rare appearanceThe rally kicked off from American Center and then Victoria Memorial, Prinsep Ghat, Writers’ Building, Lalbazar, Central Avenue, Chandni, Dharmatalla, Park Street Flyover and backA first-of-its-kind rideThe rally’s lineup featured HDs, BMWs, Triumphs and Royal Enfields, showcasing the city’s diverse motorcycling culture. “This rally was unique because, for the first time, riders from different biking communities came together under one banner,” said Atul Makharia, director, Speed Group. “A Harley rider, a Triumph rider, a BMW tourer and a Royal Enfield enthusiast all have different machines, riding postures and road cultures. Bringing them together in a single convoy was special because it celebrated the larger spirit of the biking community.”On the road to empowermentFor many women, motorcycling is an expression of independence and self-discovery. “The moment I put my helmet on and start the engine, everything else fades away. It’s just me, the road and a sense of freedom,” said a female constable. Another rider said motorcycling had transformed her confidence, teaching her to trust herself, make quick decisions and overcome fears. Many also highlighted the growing sense of sisterhood within the biking community. “Every ride feels empowering because you’re challenging stereotypes,” said another constable, adding that women riders inspire young girls to dream without limits.Challenges in the fast laneDespite the growth of Kolkata’s biking culture, riders say several challenges persist. Poor road conditions remain a major concern. “You can have a motorcycle built for touring thousands of kilometres, but a single unexpected pothole can become a safety hazard,” said Ukil, who rode a Hayabusa in the rally. Traffic congestion is another issue. “Large-capacity motorcycles are designed for open highways, but riders often spend more time negotiating stop-and-go traffic,” said Rohan Kumar Rout of Kawasaki Riders. Riders also highlighted the need for greater unity across biking communities, which often remain brand-specific. “The biking community is united by passion, but every motorcycle culture has its own identity. Creating platforms where everyone can ride together is important for the growth of the larger community,” said Shubhaneel Dutta of UBK Group.
