Audrey Niffenegger captivated readers with her 2005 illustrated novella The Three Incestuous Sisters, a gothic tale of sibling rivalry set by a lonely seaside house. It follows sisters Ophile, Clothilde, and Bettine, whose lives unravel when stranger Paris arrives, sparking jealousy, love, revenge, sabotage, and tragedy. Despite the provocative title, the story emphasises melodrama over literal incest.

A dream ensemble takes shape

Now, this dark fairy tale is getting a big-screen glow-up. Dakota Johnson, Saoirse Ronan, Jessie Buckley, and Josh O’Connor lead the film adaptation, directed by Italian auteur Alice Rohrwacher. The project, loosely based on Niffenegger’s work, promises a fresh take on the sisters’ tangled bonds filled with jealousy, romance, and despair.Rohrwacher co-wrote the script with Ottessa Moshfegh for the production set to start in April.
