DGP inaugurates international FIDE chess tournament in Amaravati
Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh director general of police (DGP) Harish Kumar Gupta on Monday inaugurated the International FIDE Rating Chess Tournament at the VIT-AP University campus in Amaravati. The tournament is being jointly organised by VIT-AP University and the Andhra Pradesh Chess Association and will continue until June 8.
Addressing participants, DGP said Amaravati is emerging as a meeting point for chess minds from across India and abroad, transforming the capital city into a hub of intellectual excellence.
Describing chess as more than just a sport, Harish Kumar Gupta said the game celebrates discipline, intelligence, strategic thinking and talent. He noted that chess, which originated in India and went on to captivate the world, is now returning to shine on an international stage in Amaravati.
The DGP remarked that the tournament reflects the spirit of the ‘Swarna Andhra-2047’ and ‘Viksit Bharat’ visions, showcasing India’s confidence and aspirations. He expressed confidence that future Grandmasters and world champions could emerge from the players participating in the event.
Emphasising the need to build a strong chess ecosystem in Andhra Pradesh, he said the state has the potential to become a nurturing ground for future champions. He also highlighted Amaravati’s transformation into a knowledge-driven city. He hoped that Amaravati would soon be developed into a futuristic “Quantum Valley” and a globally recognised knowledge hub.
