Statistical Day celebrated

VARANASI: The office of economics and statistics department celebrated Statistical Day on Wednesday to commemorate the birth anniversary of professor P C Mahalonovis, a noted statistician of the country, who established Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) in Kolkata.
Remembering the contributions of Mahalonovis, Santosh Kumar, district economics and statistical officer, said that the noted statistician was the first in the country to recognise the multifarious utility of the discipline in various activities.
Stressing on the theme of this year's Statistical Day that focused on gender-related figures, he said that as per the 2001 Census, the literacy rate of women in the district was 53.05% against the male literacy rate of 77.87%, a difference that needs to be bridged.
