Eunuch who immolated self succumbs

VADODARA: The eunuch, who had immolated herself about a week ago, died of burn injuries at SSG Hospital on Monday. Mona Thakur, 21, was admitted to SSG with second degree burns on July 27 after she set herself on fire at her residence. She was under treatment for a week. Doctors at the burns ward at SSG said Mona had endured more than 95 per cent burns when she was admitted for treatment.
"Condition of any patient, who has 90 to 95 per cent burns, is considered serious regardless of the degree of the burns. Though Mona had only second degree burns and was conscious when admitted, she had endured more than 95 per cent burns," the doctors said.
Mona had doused herself with kerosene and set herself on fire when she was alone at home on July 27. Her neighbours had rescued her and called the 108 emergency services that rushed her to the hospital. The case had evoked much rage among the LGBT community as Mona had accused another eunuch, Veena Kunwar of harassing her. Mona used to stay Baranpura Akhada that is headed by Veena. Mona's relative said she wasn't comfortable living at the akhada so she returned to her parents' home 10 days before she immolated herself.
Mona had been allegedly receiving threat calls from Veena who was forcing her to return to the akhada. Her parents kept her locked in the house due to the threat to her life. Due to mental pressure, Mona attempted to commit suicide. This was the second time that Mona had returned to her parents after joining the eunuchs. The police had arrested Veena within days of self-immolation bid by Mona. With Mona's death, the cops are now expected to charge Veena with abetment to suicide.
