Trichy: St Joseph’s College Trichy, has decided to celebrate its 175th year kick starting from Friday for a year. The college has also decided to observe ‘Kalam Day’ in memory of its illustrious alumni, former president APJ Abdul Kalam on July 27 every year.
This is to promote scientific achievement and research among the staff and students.
“Fondly known as the missile man of India, Abdul Kalam’s death anniversary will be observed as Kalam day by the college,” said Leonard Fernando, rector, St Joseph’s society.
He said that the college has produced several scientists and renowned personalities. While they are holding top positions in the country and abroad, they will be felicitated every year on Kalam day.
Apart from a variety of national and international seminars, conferences and workshops in the field of education, a grand Tamil debate on the cultural heritage of India and an English drama festival is also planned for the celebration.
Celebrations will also mark the launch of the redesigned website of the college and a pilgrimage by staff, students and alumni to the birthplace of the college in Nagapattinam from where it was shifted to Trichy.
“The 175th year celebration will also mark the long-awaited start of St Joseph’s law college,” said principal M Arockiasamy Xavier.
