Mayiladuthurai new bus stand opened, to reduce congestion
Trichy: Chief minister M K Stalin inaugurated the Perunthalaiyar Kamarajar new bus stand in Mayiladuthurai through video conferencing on Friday. Built at a cost of 29.01 crore in Manakkudi, the new bus stand offers higher passenger capacity, helps reduce congestion, and ensures more efficient bus operations.Backward classes welfare minister Siva V Meyyanathan formally dedicated the new bus stand and flagged off the bus services. The new bus stand includes 28 bus parking bays, a 1,000m-long and 15m-wide internal road, a compound wall, front entrance pathway, covered bus bays, and dedicated two-wheeler parking.It features 49 shops, two restaurants, 10 passenger waiting areas, a TNSTC office, and a reservation centre. Modern free toilets are provided separately for men, women, and differently-abled people.Additional facilities include two breastfeeding rooms, two timekeeper rooms, a police room, an ATM, a control room, a luggage room, a purified drinking water unit, and ample passenger seating.The previous bus stand, which had been operational since the 1960s, was situated on Gandhiji Road and covered around acres with 12 bus bays. Growing population and increasing bus services had long led to demands for a larger, modern facility to meet the rising needs.Mayiladuthurai municipality initiated construction of the new bus stand in Manakkudi after laying the foundation stone in Dec 2022. The project took more than three years to complete.
