THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: On Thursday, three-year-old Anjana collapsed while playing in her house and was rushed to hospital, but on Saturday doctors said she was brain dead.
Her parents were shattered beyond words but they didn't hesitate when the doctors asked if their beloved child's organs could be donated. Anjana's organs — kidneys, liver and corneas — were harvested late on Saturday night and her liver and kidneys were donated to a five-year-old boy admitted in Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences here.
Anjana's corneas were given to the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology and will be donated to the appropriate recipient in the hospital's waiting list. She has become the youngest organ donor in the state.
Anjana's parents, staying at Enikkara near Karakulam, were very reluctant to talk to the media beyond saying that they donated their daughter's organs so that other lives might be saved. It is a sentiment that more and more people in Kerala appear to be recognizing.
