Thiruvananthapuram: The state govt has made it mandatory for classified hotels and other tourist accommodation units to provide restrooms and other basic facilities for taxi drivers carrying domestic and foreign tourists.
The decision was taken to ensure the safe and comfortable movement of tourists across the state. The difficulties faced by tourist taxi drivers were also taken up on a priority basis.
Tourism minister Mohamed Riyas had convened a meeting of the drivers' unions to look into their issues. Following discussions, the authorities concerned were directed to work out guidelines to ensure clean restroom facilities for taxi drivers, as part of initiatives to create a supportive and inclusive environment for all stakeholders in the tourism sector.
"Taxi drivers are an integral part of Kerala Tourism and this decision meets their long-pending demand of facilitating the basic amenities," minister said.
The taxi drivers have a vital role in ensuring a safe and comfortable travel experience for tourists. They safely take tourists to the destinations of their choice and share basic information about the places of their visit. The govt is implementing an assurance given to the drivers through this order. This will help enhance the enjoyment of tourists as well, he added.
As per the govt order, all hotels and tourism accommodation units in the state shall henceforth provide ample restroom facilities, for taxi drivers who transport domestic and international tourists to various tourist destinations.
The tourism department also has plans to issue special identity cards for tourist taxi drivers and hold awareness sessions for them.
