Uphold minorities’ rights: Meghalaya grp

Shillong: The Central Puja Committee (CPC) in Meghalaya, which is an apex coordinating body of puja committees and Hindu institutions in the state, has appealed the Centre to impress upon the Bangladesh Govt and the United Nations to uphold the rights of minority Hindus and other groups facing persecution in Bangladesh.
In a media statement, the CPC said minority Hindus and other religious groups were “facing genocide from fundamental Islamic radicals”, and appealed for the safety and security of the Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh.
On the other hand, in a letter to CM Conrad K Sangma, state BJP vice president and member of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council, Bernard N Marak requested for the setting of camp for the Garos, Khasis and other tribals entering India. He also urged the CM to provide them “rehabilitation on humanitarian ground.”
Marak said there are several tribals, including Garos, in Bangladesh and if they seek refuge in Meghalaya, they should be rehabilitated and deported when tension subsides.
