“The Jal Jeevan Mission to connect every household with functional tap connection by 2024 will go a long way in ensuring that far-flung villages are provided clean, potable water and also that women and girls do not have to face difficulty in fetching clean water,” said an official. He added that the vision of the mission is not only to roll out a scheme but to oversee the end-to-end implementation and prioritization of water conservation and sustainability.
Meghalaya, being a hilly state, there is no dearth of natural sources of water and in fact, it is one of the wettest regions on the planet and has historically been home to one of the cleanest natural water bodies in the world. But the irony is that people have to toil hard for ensuring water availability in their households.
The Meghalaya government implemented the Jal Jeevan Mission to address the problem and met with many challenges. “Because of the focused intervention, commitment and relentless hard work of the state government, Jal Jeevan Mission has been successful,” said an official.
