One killed as earthmover falls into well near Yercaud in Tamil Nadu

SALEM: In a freak accident, an earthmover fell into a well after its parapet gave away at Maramangalam near Yercaud on Thursday. A 63-year-old labourer, who was sitting on the carriage of the earthmover, fell into the well and died.
The deceased has been identified as M Kariyamalai of Maramangalam.
P Sathish Kumar, 25, of Kolli Hills in Namakkal district, is an earthmover operator.On Thursday, he went to Maramangalam to dig up pits to construct a government school.
Sathish Kumar attempted to take water from a well using the earthmover’s bucket for the construction site. He moved the earthmover near the well and lowered the bucket inside the well.
“The earthmover suddenly fell inside the well after the parapet collapsed,” a police officer said.
While Sathish Kumar managed to jump out of the earthmover with minor injuries, Kariyamalai, who was sitting in the carriage of the vehicle, fell into the well and died.
The fire and rescue services personnel retrieved the body from the well. They sent the body to the government hospital in Yercaud for post-mortem.
The Yercaud police registered a case.
