JAMSHEDPUR: Of the dozen medals on the first day of the weightlifting, hosts Jharkhand managed to grab only one with Sandhya Rani winning bronze medal in the 48kg women category scoring 151 points.
She fell short of six points to win gold and three points to win silver that eventually went to Soniya Chanu of Uttar Pradesh and Kh Sanjita Chanu of Manipur who posted 157 and 154 points, respectively.

Though, highlight of the day's event was the national record set by S Deva Kumar of SSCB who by lifting 122kg in snatch event of the 62kg men category broke the old record of 120kgs, which is in the name of M Arun of Tamil Nadu, created at a national meet in Imphal in the year 1999.
Incidentally, N Sunil Kumar of Tamil Nadu who by lifting 121kg in snatch event of 62kg men category also surpassed the old record of 120kg but lagged a point behind Deva Kumar in making a new national meet record in his name.
Interestingly, in the 62kg category Sunil Kumar won the gold by scoring total 262 points while the silver and bronze went to S Deva Kumar and Yukar Sibi of Arunachal Pradesh who scored 254 and 251 total points, respectively.
In the 56kg men category, V Srinivas Rao of SSCB bagged gold medal scoring 226 points and Mayur Sinhasane of Maharashtra with 225 points earned silver medal whereas the bronze went to M Tamil Selvan of Tamil Nadu who scored a total 205 points.
In the last event of the day H Shaya Devi of Manipur won gold with total 170 points in the 53kgs women contest. The silver went to Piainu Chanu of Assam and bronze to Minati Sethi of Orissa who scored 168 and 161 points, respectively.
