Jharkhand: Humiliated by loan collection staff, minor girl kills self

A 17-year-old girl in Chatra, India, died by suicide after allegedly being humiliated for a late payment of her brother's loan installment. The girl had gone to the private company's office to deposit the monthly installment, but her brother was not at home, causing a delay. When she finally went to deposit the money, an employee insulted her. She consumed poison later that night and was declared dead at a hospital. Police have initiated an investigation but have not yet received a formal complaint.

CHATRA: A 17-year-old girl consumed poison at her home and died after she was allegedly humiliated just for late payment of her brother's loan instalment of Rs 585 by a few hours.
According to sources, the girl from a village in Chatra went to the private company's office to deposit the monthly instalment against the loan taken by her brother. Police have started a probe though an FIR is yet to be filed.

Sources said the girl's brother had taken a loan of Rs 25,000 from the Caspor Micro Finance Company about three months ago.

A total of 20 villagers had also taken loans from the company and so an employee of the company came to collect the instalment amount in the village on Friday. But the girl's family failed to pay the instalment of Rs 585 as her brother was not at home, sources added.

Later on the same day, the girl went to the firm's office to deposit the money where one of the employees, identified as Sunil Kumar Paswan, allegedly caught her hand and insulted her using filthy language for paying the monthly loan amount late. Humiliated, she returned home and consumed poison late in the night.
She was rushed to a hospital, but seeing her condition, the doctors referred her to the Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College and Hospital in Hazaribag, where she was declared brought dead.

Later, the police were informed. The sub-divisional police officer of Chatra, Avinash Kumar, on Monday, said they have started a probe to find out what led the minor girl to take the extreme step. "Whoever is found guilty will not be spared," he said.
The officer-in-charge of the local police station said so far, they haven't received a written complaint from the girl's family. He said they are awaiting a formal complaint from the deceased family to lodge an FIR.
