Chhattisgarh: Orange alert issued for Bastar, heavy rain likely

RAIPUR: After a break, the rains system has returned, bringing back the possibility of heavy rains in the Bastar and Durg divisions of Chhattisgarh.
An orange alert was issued for Saturday in the Bastar division comprising Bastar, Dantewada, Bijapur, Sukma, Kondagaon, Kanker, and Narayanpur. A yellow alert was issued for Friday in the same areas, said Meteorological department scientist H P Chandra.A low-pressure area lies over the west-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining the east-central Bay of Bengal, It is very likely to intensify further over the West-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining North-West Bay of Bengal-North Coastal Andhra Pradesh-South Coastal Odisha in the next 48 hours.
The monsoon trough lies at the mean sea level at Jaisalmer, Bhopal, Gondia, Jagdalpur, Kalingapatnam, and then east-southeast to the centre of low pressure, he added. Due to the formation of the system, light to moderate rains and thunderstorms are likely to occur in many places of the state. Heavy rainfalls are likely to remain mainly in South Chhattisgarh.
According to the data of the Meteorological Department, from June 1 to September 8, Chhattisgarh received an average of one thousand 68 mm of rain. This is 7% more than the 10-year normal average rainfall of 999.5 mm. The Bijapur district of the south has received 82% excess rainfall. On the other hand, 51% less water has fallen in the Surguja district of the north. Balrampur, Koriya, Jashpur and Bemetara districts are also facing water scarcity. On the other hand, districts like Raipur, Korba, Raigad, Janjgir-Champa, Gariaband, Durg and Kanker have received normal rains.
