RAIPUR: The murder of three members of a tribal family in what was initially believed to be an accidental fire in Kawardha district last month has triggered a political row in Chhattisgarh, with Congress alleging a “cover-up” attempt.
Janhu Ram (12), and his parents, Hiramati and Budhram Baiga, were found charred to death on the morning of Jan 15 in Nagadbara, 150km north of Raipur. After nearly six weeks of investigation, police termed it a triple murder and arrested 14 suspects, including two women and a minor, on Feb 21-22.
According to police, Budhram and Rajo Bai had a fight over a land dispute on the night of Jan 14, after which both went home. Around 2am that night, villagers heard cries for help, but were too scared to step out so late. The family was hacked to death and their hut was set on fire, say investigators. Rajo is among thosearrested and had admitted to her role in the crime, said police.
On Friday, Congress created a ruckus in assembly, accusing BJP govt of failing to protect the Baigas, who are a ‘Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group’. They demanded the resignation of deputy chief minister Vijay Sharma, who holds the home portfolio, and a CBI probe into the incident.
Congress members pointed out that Baigas were considered the “adopted children” of the President of India, and needed protection. The treasury benches also shouted slogans, leading to a fiery exchange in the house.
Congress MLAs later staged a demonstration in front of the Gandhi statue on the assembly premises, with former CM Bhupesh Baghel and leader of opposition Charnadas Mahant accusing govt of trying to “suppress the triple murder”. Baghel said Congress will send a fact-finding team to the village.
