PUNE: The Sangvi police on Thursday arrested Saheb Ali Khan (19), a resident of Shrikrishna Colony in Kalewadi, for allegedly marrying a woman by using a fake name and fleeing with her ornaments worth Rs 65,000.
Acting on a complaint filed by Snehal Vijay Chauhan (21) of Kalewadi, the Sangvi police station have also booked Jayashree Raju Chauhan and Raju Shailesh Chauhan for impersonating the suspect's parents.
Senior police inspector Purushottam Mane said that Khan, who hails from Rajkot (Gujarat), has been staying in Kalewadi for the last nine years. Saying he was Vijay Chauhan, he married Snehal on October 17, 2008. Jayashree and Raju acted as his parents, Mane said.
Snehal later learnt that her husband was an imposter. When she sought an explanation from Khan, he fled along with his parents' to Gujarat with her gold ornaments worth Rs 65,000. Snehal then registered a cheating case against Khan.
Acting on the instructions of the police, Snehal called up Khan and persuaded him to return home. After he arrived at Kalewadi, the police nabbed him.
During interrogation, the suspect identified his accomplices as Jayashree and Raju, Mane said, adding the Khan was arrested for cheating under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code.
