Officials from the water supply department of the PMC said that some supply lines have become old, leading to frequent water leakages. Therefore, the lines will have to be replaced at the earliest. For the first phase, the PMC's water supply department has tabled a proposal before the standing committee to approve Rs39 lakh for urgent repairs.
An official said, "We are starting with the transmission lines. The administration is using sensors to identify the leakages. For instance, old pipelines from the city's core areas have been replaced in the last one year. Similar initiatives will be extended to other locations as well."
The work of replacement of old lines and repair of the existing lines have also been proposed under the 24X7 water supply project. As per the PMC's estimates, around 30% to 40% of water is lost during transmission, mainly due to old pipes and frequent damages.
The MLAs from the city said that they have requested the authorities to expedite the works under the 24X7 equitable water supply project. Shivajinagar MLA Siddharth Shirole
in a recent review meeting told officials to replace the old water supply infrastructure by introducing new pipelines with more capacity.
Wadgaonsheri MLA Sunil Tingre said that the civic administration should expedite the work of equitable water supply project in the newly developing areas like Lohegoan, Dhanori, Wagholi etc.
