Pune: The district rural police on Tuesday arrested Phursungi resident Mangesh Pawar (32) for duping 28 people, including six women, of Rs41 lakh between September and November this year under the pretext of securing them jobs with a pharmaceutical firm.
Pawar even gave them bogus joining letters and ID cards of the firm, police said.
The fraud came to light when the victims reached the firm and were told by the staffers that the letters were fake.
“The victims on Monday evening contacted Pawar and asked him to meet them in Saswad. When he reached, the victims and brought him to the police station. We formally arrested him on Tuesday after questioning,” sub-inspector Vinay Zinzurke of the Saswad police told TOI, adding, “Pawar claimed he spent the money on merry-making. He will be in police custody till December 23.”
Aniket Jagtap of Saswad, who had given Rs1.50 lakh to Pawar for the promised job, has filed a complaint with the Saswad police.
Zinzurke said, “In September this year, one of Jagtap’s friends, also among victims, told him about Pawar. The friend told Jagtap that Pawar was a manager with the pharmaceutical firm and was helping him in securing an assistant executive’s job, and could help Jagtap too.”
Zinzurke added, “After Jagtap gave Pawar Rs1.5 lakh, he gave Jatgap an offer letter for the post of assistant executive transport division with a monthly salary of Rs28,700. On September 17, he gave Jagtap a letter in which his employee ID was mentioned. Pawar also added Jagtap in a mobile messenger service group with 27 other members.”
The officer said in October, Pawar gave the company’s ID card to Jagtap and said work would start after training. “On November 30, Pawar took the 28 victims to Bengaluru by flight, but brought them all back the next day, claiming their training will be held in Hadapsar,” Zinzurke said.
Finally, the victims went to the company and found that no one with the name of Shankar Pawar works there.
“Pawar is unemployed. A probe is on,” said Zinzurke.
